Before we demonize social media, we should remember that most sin is a distortion of something good.

So true. Like any tool, from fire to language to money, it's about the way we use it -- not about the thing itself. I think the debate is often around a question of formation: do these media provide more opportunities for us to form us into a practice of greed/pride; how can we use them to form us toward deepening relationship? Which is a totally different matter than just avoiding the tools.
