To suss out the theology behind The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, listen to the songs.
Just watched the film, and recognized the prospector's story "All Gold Canyon" as a Jack London short story, an example of his naturalism. His text contrasts the wild beauty of the canyon with the brute fang-and-claw death struggle in the ambush. The story has been anthologized in American Lit texts; I did not recognize any of the other stories, if from Western sources if not Coen originals.
