Re the first half of your article: perhaps the film industry, like the economy, goes through cycles, and we are in for another period of Film Noir, with weary street-worn but street-smart protagonists fighting their own demons as well as their antagonists . . . . that being said, 3D/sci-fi is trying to make a come-back also---
Maybe it's my age, but I LOVED The Expendables.
I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed Toy Story 3!
The only two movies I watched this summer were How to Train a Dragon and Despicable Me, and that was only because the kids wanted to go see them. I think Hollywood has come to depend on nostalgia considering the dozens and dozens of remakes they are focusing on. It worked once, maybe it will work again. It's much easier to re-imagine someone else's idea than to come up with your own, I guess
