It’s time to put away childish hate when it comes to Kelly Marie Tran’s Last Jedi character.

There's nothing childish about hatred or prejudice. Sexism and racism are not mere immaturity. This isn't a matter of no longer preferring lesser things and growing into greater things as in the Scripture passage you cite, but of the most basic and fundamental commitment of Christian life: love your neighbor. This is so central that when Jesus summarizes the Law for us he sets this command next to "love the Lord your God."

The phenomenon you describe is sin masquerading as mere childish preference for things to stay the same. This is a matter of grown folks (usually white men) who can't handle a change: "their" story has morphed, and is now a story that isn't simply their point of view, their experience, embodied by their avatar in the story, the hero. What is revealed here is white supremacy and patriarchy, not childishness. We need to be honest with ourselves about this if we wish to be free, to be reconciled, to really love our neighbor.
