Stephen Colbert’s church marketing tips

Josh Larsen

Churches have tried Trunk or Treat events, Vacation Bible School programs and all other sorts of outreach efforts, only to see attendance at worship services dwindle. Last night on his satirical news show The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert covered another way to fill the pews: free steak and guns.

A Kentucky Baptist group recently offered just that, with organizer Chuck McAlister giving this rationale: “Hunting is huge in Kentucky … So we get in there and burp and scratch and talk about the right to bear arms and that stuff.”

Though I know a few folks from Kentucky and have never seen them burp or scratch, perhaps McAlister is on to something. It’s certainly a way to make Christianity distinctive. As Colbert said, “What are the Hindus going to offer? A bowl of chickpeas and the knowledge that in a previous life you were a bowl of chickpeas?”

If you missed it, this was a decidedly TC-friendly episode of Colbert. His opening piece covered atheist objections to a cross at the 9/11 memorial site, while his guest was Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of the Cosmos series we wrote about yesterday. A clip of the steak-and-guns bit is below:
