Surprised at the inclusion (and high rank) of Dexter. I thoroughly enjoyed a few seasons of the show (1, 2 and 4 especially) but the last few have underwhelmed.
Also, I'm sad that Parenthood didn't make the list--it took me a while to warm up to the show, but it's now the only thing on network TV that I look forward to watching. The show rides on the strength of its actors, but I think the writing has really blossomed into something great this season, as well.
Dexter got the nod (in my mind) because of the chances they took this season. For me, every "what if" has been played out... well, a lot of them.
Parenthood is a great show. Oddly enough, I can't get into it because it is too realistic, dramatic, unnerving, etc. My wife and I look at each other during almost every scene with a glance that says, "I think we have had that EXACT conversation!" So for me, it almost feels more like a documentary than fiction. Anyway, that is the beauty of lists—difference of opinion sparks good questions!
