The worst advice I ever got was when I first started dating my wife. My future mother in law told me " If you can't be good- be carefull" To red blooded teens that gave us a lot of scope!
My best advice was just after I had given my life to Jesus Christ & the old Salvation Army Officer counceling me said " Don't think you now have to join a church -- Christ has now joined you to The Church" !
I love that you brought this topic up! I have been pondering this same issue for the past few days myself. I also struggle in knowing the boundaries between telling a friend what I think should be done in a situation based on what our common faith tells us and knowing when I would be most useful simply praying for discernment on his/her part. This is compounded for me as a person who is a Social Worker by profession; one of our guiding values is self-determination - in other words: don't tell people what to do.

I was faced with this situation head-on last week with a good friend, a sister in faith. She presented a situation that clearly needed action. However, we were also in a rather social setting, and I was not sure where my place was in telling her my opinion about what she should do. I gracefully reminded her what we know to be God's standards and resolved to pray - hard. Today she contacted me to tell me that she has resolved the situation and to thank me for not giving her advice the other night, even though she knew she needed to do something.

I think that if we don't know what to do, the best thing to do is to pray for the other person - and for ourselves. Pray that we know how to act in the situation, and that God provides our friends with discernment. You can't screw up talking to God. You can, however, screw up earthly relationships.

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY WHEN YOU DO GIVE GOOD ADVICE TO OTHER YOU HAVE THOSE THAT LISTEN AND THEN YOU HAVE THOSE THAT WON'T I FINE THAT MOST PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DO WHAT THEY WANT ANY WAYS WE STRIVE TO TRY OUR BEST TO GIVE ADVICE TO THOSE WE SEE GOING THROUGH A HARD TIME... MORE THEN LIKELY THEY WILL LISTEN BUT FOR SOME IT GOES IN ONE EAR AND OUT ANOTHER... WE TRY TO MAKE THEM AWARE THAT WE HAVE ALL READY WALK THOSE VERY SHOES THAT THEY ARE IN BUT SOMETIME IN GIVING ADVICE TOO... I DO THINK THAT THEY FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT WE ALL HAVE BEEN THERE TOO AND I WILL SAY THAT IN OUR CHOICES THAT WE SHOULD HELP THEM ALSO AND NOT JUST IN WORD WE HAVE TO NOW DAY WITH ACTION SHOW THEM THAT WE UNDERSTAND THEM AND TRY TO ASSIST THEM IN THAT AREA AND WHEN WE DO THAT IT HELP STRENGHT THEM AND IT ENCOUGE THAT PERSON TO DO SO MUCH BETTER EXSPECIALLY WHEN THEY FINE THAT THERE IS SOMEONE IN THEY CONER THAT BELIEVE IN THEM ALSO AND THAT GIVES THEM STRENGHT TO HOLD ON AS THEY WATCH YOU... AND THE GOD MIGHTY HAND AT WORK AS HE NEVER FAIL OR LIE SO HE USES US TO HELP TO WIN AND SAVE LOSS SOUL AMEN.
